The director of Beethoven Virus, Lee Jae Kyu talks about Kim Myung Min and Lee Byung Hun’s acting.

On Feb. 8 at the Seoul Arts Center, Lee Jae Kyu, who was recently appointed as Adjunct Professor of Broadcasting/Entertainment/Video Department of Seoul Arts Center Academy, gave a special lecture to 50 freshmen students on the subject of broadcast vs. motion picture.

During the lecture, he talked about Kim Myung Min, whom he worked with in Beethoven Virus, and Lee Byung Hun, who is starring in the digital movie Influence, which Lee Jae Kyu is currently directing.

About Kim Myung Min, who has been highly praised for his complete transformation in every role he has played  in TV dramas and movies, Lee Jae Kyu said, “If Kim Myung Min has an upcoming filming of a scene where he dies,  he immediately  starts to think  like that person and completely immerses himself into that person’s psychological state 3 days before filming.”

He added,”KMM is a type of actor who always puts his best effort into creating a particular character he plays.  He relentlessly practices  lines and movements of the character.”

Lee Jae Kyu also advised the students, "the way to become a true actor is to put in constantly the best effort,” quoting what Kim Myung Min had said in his humble award acceptance speech "because I lack talent, I had to work especially harder."

About Lee Byung Hun, Lee Jae Kyu said, “with just one reading of the script, he can put his soul into his role” and “with incredible concentration he immerses himself into acting.”

He said that “director’s role is to lead each actor in the right direction so that he or she can bring out the best of himself or herself.”

Lee Jae Kyu started to work at MBC in 1996, and directed Damo and Fashion 70.  Last year he was awarded Best Director in the special foreign drama category at the Tokyo Drama Festival, and Best Director of TV Drama  at the 21st Korean Directors’ Association Award.
